Best time to visit China

Month by month — weather by region, festival dates, crowd calendars, and the perfect window for each destination.

The short answer

April–May and September–October are the sweet spots nationwide: mild weather, clear skies, and the festivals that make travel unforgettable. Avoid the first weeks of May and October — the two national Golden Weeks — when domestic tourism peaks and everything is booked and crowded. Summer is great for the mountains (Zhangjiajie, Guilin) and hot in the cities; winter is cold in the north but dramatic and empty at the Great Wall.

Weather & crowds

The year, month by month

Each card shows the national mood, where to be, and what to skip. Festival dates below follow the 2026 lunar calendar.

JanuaryQuiet & cold

Cold and dry nationwide. Beijing can hit −8°C; Harbin's ice festival is the reason to brave it. Fewer tourists, lower prices, crisp Great Wall days.

FebruaryFestive & cold

Chinese New Year lands here (Feb 17, 2026) — the biggest travel rush of the year. Cities empty as people go home; book trains weeks ahead or stay put and enjoy the fireworks and temple fairs.

MarchSpring arrives

South warms first: Guilin green, Hangzhou blossoms, Lijiang flowers. North still cool. Shoulder-season prices and thin crowds — a strong month overall.

AprilPeak spring

Arguably the best month: mild, dry, everywhere green. Note Qingming (early April) is a domestic holiday — add one buffer day around it.

MayGolden week

May 1–5 is Labour Day Golden Week — the single most crowded window of the year. Travel before or after it; if you must go, book everything months ahead.

JuneWarm & wet

Rain season starts in the south: misty Guilin is poetic, but bring an umbrella. Beijing heats up; the mountains (Zhangjiajie) are lush and dramatic.

JulyHot & busy

School holidays make it busy; cities (Beijing, Shanghai, Xi'an) get hot and humid. Great for high-altitude escapes: Lijiang, Wudang, and northern grasslands.

AugustHot & stormy

Similar to July with more rain and occasional typhoons near the coast. Chengdu and the west stay comfortable; beach and mountain routes still work.

SeptemberGolden return

The second best window: heat breaks, skies clear, rice terraces turn gold. Crowds are thin until the end of the month. Mid-Autumn Festival (Sep 25, 2026) adds lantern-lit evenings.

OctoberCrisp & crowded

Perfect weather — and the National Day Golden Week (Oct 1–7) at its start. Go after Oct 8 for empty parks, autumn foliage, and the Great Wall in golden light.

NovemberAutumn calm

The underrated best: clear cool air, autumn colours in Beijing and Jiuzhaigou, low prices, almost no queues. Ideal for photography and slow travel.

DecemberQuiet & cold

Cold and quiet. The Great Wall at −5°C is empty and breathtaking; Harbin's ice world opens. Christmas and New Year are low-key in China — good for serenity.

Destinations

When each place shines

From our destination guides — the precise windows that make each city its best self.

Beijing

April–May and September–October: clear skies and comfortable walls. Winter is cold but dramatically quiet at Mutianyu.

Xi'an

March–May and September–November. Summer is hot; winter dry and cold but emptier.

Guilin & Yangshuo

April–June for green terraces; September–October for clear skies. Misty rain is a feature, not a bug.

Zhangjiajie

April–May and September–October for clear air. Avoid Chinese public holidays — queues are legendary.

Chengdu

March–June and September–November. Pandas are most active in the morning — arrive at opening.

Lijiang

March–May (spring flowers) and October–November (clear mountain views). Rainy season: June–September.

Hangzhou

March–May (peach blossoms) and September–November. A rainy afternoon is atmospheric, not ruined.

Traveler tip: Golden Weeks (May 1–5, Oct 1–7) and the Spring Festival (Feb 2026) move millions of people. If your dates are fixed, book trains and hotels 3–4 weeks ahead and treat 'home base' city days as your buffer — the countryside empties out.
